With almost 70 Ha under vine, the estate is capable of producing an annual average of 25.000 cases. In 2005, the Robert Mondavi winery (including the Opus One share) was sold to Constellation Brands, but the Rothschild family still is a part-owner of the venture. In 1993, Opus One introduced their second wine, called “Overture”, made from grapes which didn’t make it into the “Grand Vin”. The label shows the silhouette of both Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Although the Cabernet Sauvignon grape is used the most, they might also use the other “Bordeaux” grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec in their blend. Already one of the most expensive wines at that time from California, in the 1990’s it became a very popular wine with high demand in both Europe and Asia, reaching cult status. In 1989 they built a new, state-of-the-art winery in Oakville. Until 1982 the wine was called “Napamédoc”, to give an idea about the philosophy of the project. The idea was to create a red wine in Bordeaux style, made from particularly Napa Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The 2007 Opus One is composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. The wine will age effortlessly for decades. Polished, supple and harmoniously precise, the 2007 fuses a seamless mid-palate with soft yet sinewy tannins. Reminiscent of the generous 2001 vintage in style and structure, the 2007 shows very high color intensity with aromas of cassis, nutmeg, raspberries, cola, fresh oats, dark chocolate and forest floor. During the 21 days of crush, the crews worked 12 night harvests, delivering the first fruit on September 4th and the last on October 17th. A heat spell, unseasonably cool temperatures, rain and the threat of frost posed an unusual challenge for Opus One's harvesting crews. Providing ideal weather for both budbreak and veraison, the 2007 growing season was picture perfect until late August, when a unique combination of extremes subverted the prospect of a quick and early harvest.
